Maybe they notice a detail an adult would have walked right past, spend twenty minutes figuring out how to make something work, or turn an ordinary space into an elaborate game that only makes sense to them. These moments may look simple from the outside, but they are full of curiosity, problem-solving, imagination, and learning.
At WonderTrek Children’s Museum, these are the kinds of moments we want to make more room for.
WonderTrek is a one-of-a-kind children’s museum built around outdoor exploration. Our nine-acre Outdoor Adventure will give children room to move, investigate, imagine, and play, with the 2,500-square-foot Adventure Outfitters Studio providing another space for hands-on discovery. Throughout the experience, children will encounter immersive environments designed not to tell them what to do, but to invite them to decide for themselves.
A child-led approach is at the heart of what makes WonderTrek different.
A visit might look completely different from one child to the next, and that is exactly the point. One child may be drawn to building and creating, while another wants to climb, investigate, or spend time figuring out how something works. Children can follow an idea, change their minds, return to something they enjoyed, or create their own way to play. Rather than moving from activity to activity with an expected outcome, they have the freedom to make choices and shape their own experience.
Emilee Mailhot, Evaluation Specialist at WonderTrek, describes this philosophy as giving children the freedom to follow their own curiosity while creating an environment that supports them along the way.
“Child-led doesn’t mean hands-off,” she explains. “It means slowing down, paying attention, and supporting a child’s exploration without taking it over.”
That distinction is an important part of the WonderTrek experience. Children are not left to figure everything out on their own. Instead, they are surrounded by thoughtful spaces, interesting materials, and attentive adults who offer support while allowing the child to determine where the experience goes.
For parents and caregivers, this creates an opportunity to experience play a little differently, too. Instead of feeling like they need to direct the day or make sure their child experiences everything, adults can step back and let curiosity take the lead. They might join in when invited, ask a question that encourages a child to think a little deeper, or simply watch as their child works something out independently.
The freedom to explore is intentional because play is one of the ways children naturally make sense of the world around them. When they are given opportunities to make decisions, test ideas, encounter challenges, and try again, they are developing skills such as creativity, persistence, communication, cooperation, and problem-solving.
At WonderTrek, learning doesn’t have to be separated from play because learning is happening through the play itself.
Exploration also means having the opportunity to stretch a little beyond what feels familiar. Children benefit from experiences that allow them to take reasonable, age-appropriate risks and discover what they are capable of doing. WonderTrek’s environments are being thoughtfully designed to support those experiences while giving parents and caregivers confidence in the spaces where their children are playing and exploring.
Ultimately, WonderTrek is about trusting children and giving them something they do not always get enough of: time and space to follow their own curiosity. We believe children are capable of much more when they are given the freedom to make choices, the opportunity to play deeply, and an environment that encourages them to keep asking, “What happens if I try this?”
When families visit WonderTrek, we hope they will leave with more than happy memories. We hope they will remember the moment their child figured something out, the unexpected game they invented, the question they couldn’t stop asking, or the adventure that became a favorite story to tell later.
